This was a fairly easy puzzle with a tricky theme. It was constructed by a guy who I went to elementary school with, a grade ahead of me. It's apparently a theme that was done just 2 years ago on a Thursday, but I have no recollection. Essentially, a Y in an across answer, reads as VI going down (as a Y is a V atop an I). Once you get that, the rest falls pretty easily. You get the greatest crossword hits, a rental car company (AVIS), a shoe company (AVIA), an ancient poet (OVID) with three boxes. Putting in Ys like that helps you get the long across answers, so nothing too awful.
